date of Mr. Smith's report, and it is recognised that the building must suffice until a new Post Office is built.
8. Presses.
Light and ventilation could be greatly improved by substituting for all the present presses and boxes light iron skeleton presses substituting rabbit wire for planking.
The presses should be on castors, space will be economised as receptacles such as these could be put across windows without obstructing light or air. When boxes had been cleared, letters left behind would be at once seen. Wire presses could be washed through and would not become dust collectors as do the present ones.
H and I show the floor space as it is now and as it would be if the wire presses are approved.
9. Bags.
Some 200 stout canvas bags closing with a long-jawed metal padlock opening with one master key should be supplied. Each relief when it went off duty could then clear the whole of the boxes, tie up all the letters and papers and strike them down to the mail vault where they should be stored in bins. Each spell could then handle its own mail matter. When there was enough mail matter to fill a mail bag, the bag could be at once filled and sealed ready for despatching. At present some pigeon holes are filled and baskets are in front of them with the surplus waiting in the office for a day or two until some particular rail is made.
